Perrysburg’s Maddy Williams gets in front of Anthony Wayne’s Abby Allen in last night’s Northern Lakes League soccer game. Williams scored three goals as the Yellow Jackets, ranked No. 1 in Ohio, won 4-0 over the No. 10-ranked Generals.
Unreal and amazing were just two of the superlatives used to describe the play of Perrysburg senior forward Maddy Williams, who tallied a hat trick Wednesday in a Northern Lakes League girls soccer showdown.
Those same words could also apply to the No. 1-ranked Yellow Jackets who rolled to a 4-0 shutout over 10th-ranked Anthony Wayne.
Williams scored three straight goals with one in the first half and two more in the second before about 450 spectators at Perrysburg's Steinecker Stadium.
Williams, who has committed to play at Purdue, has now scored 22 goals in just seven games.
"It's really good and the goals are awesome. But I just try to help out my teammates," Williams said. "It was a really big win. We knew we had to work really hard in order to beat them."
Perrysburg (7-0-0), which is the No. 1 ranked team in the Division I coaches poll, moved to 3-0-0 in NLL play. Junior Courtney Clody scored the other goal for the Yellow Jackets who have outscored their opponents 42-3.
"I was happy our forwards were patient," Perrysburg co-head coach Jorge Diaz said. "We knew they were going to play very tight on us. So we needed to exploit opportunities when we had them. We were able to capitalize with Maddy Williams scoring three goals. In the last 10 years I have not seen a girl like that. She has the nose to score. She is really amazing."
The field appeared tilted toward the AW end for most of the match as Perrysburg finished with 28 shots, including 13 on net.
The stellar play of Anthony Wayne junior goalie Taylor Hill was the story of the first half as she allowed just one by her, while making several fantastic saves. But the Generals had only seven shots, including one on goal, and fell to 5-2-0 and 2-1-0 in the NLL.
"Taylor Hill is a two-time MVP as a junior," AW coach Lori Williams said. "She is captain for a reason. She's doing a great job."
But Williams worked her way through three AW defenders to get Perrysburg on the board. Her shot hit the far post and went in to make it 1-0 with 14:02 left in the first half. But Hill made another diving save late to keep it a one-goal game.
Perrysburg’s Abby Sattler, left, and Anthony Wayne’s Abbi Schneider battle for the ball in a Northern Lakes League contest between two state-ranked teams.
"Being up 1-0 at the half was not enough for us," Williams said. "We're a team that likes to get a lot of goals. We came out and did it."
Williams added her second at the 29:29 mark. This time a good feed from Rachel Olmstead set Williams up for her laser shot from about 20 yards out that found the upper left corner of the net.
Good work inside the box from Ericka Joldrichsen and Beth Glowacki led to Williams' third goal with 19:35 left.
"Maddy Williams was just unreal," said Williams, the AW coach. "We were man-marking her and it didn't matter. She still had a hat trick. Kudos to her. She's just an exceptional player."
The Yellow Jackets added another when Clody's shot deflected off of a General defender and slipped past Hill for a 4-0 lead with 13:52 remaining.
Williams, who scored five goals in an NLL opener against Northview last week, said the Jackets have a target on their back. Perrysburg has won two NLL titles in a row.
"Obviously being No. 1 in the state, everyone wants to beat us," Williams said. "So it meant a lot to win this game."
