Letters to the Editor

Column about Szor a masterpiece

Kudos to retired Blade editor Tom Walton on his column about Sam Szor's abbreviated conducting role in "Music Under the Stars" ("Szor, symphony act in concert to achieve harmony," op-ed, July 2). The column was a masterpiece of evenhandedness.

Mr. Walton treated a sensitive situation with empathy and fairness. He acknowledged Mr. Szor's considerable contributions to the music culture of this area. And he was equally cognizant of the difficult decision that Kathleen Carroll, the symphony's president and chief executive officer, felt compelled to make.

What's so cruel about confinement?

I would like the writer of your June 23 editorial "Cruel confinement" to explain what corrections people should do with a person serving a life sentence who then kills another prisoner or a guard.

Should that inmate be left in the prison's open population? What about after the second or third murder committed in an open population?

Voters should pay postage on ballots

If voters do not use shoes or gasoline to get to their voting places, they should at least pay the postage to send in their absentee ballots ("No stamp of approval," editorial, June 16).

Airport official not to be blamed

I've known Jerry Chabler, chairman of the Toledo-Lucas County Port Authority board of directors' airport committee, for more than 60 years. The letter writer who said that he needs to retire because a commuter airline left town is wrong ("Failed airline an ill wind for airport," Readers' Forum, June 29).

An airline has to get schedules approved by the Federal Aviation Administration for landing slots. The port authority and Jerry Chabler have nothing to do with it.

The writer's suggestion that airport operations be returned to the city of Toledo is also wrong. The city can't seem to fill potholes, let alone run an airport.

Winter flights would make sense

I made three round-trip flights last winter between Toledo and Punta Gorda, Fla. Many of my friends and family did the same, using DirectAir.

With DirectAir out of business, I wonder why our port authority has not been more aggressive in finding another carrier. Who would take summer flights to Myrtle Beach, S.C., when golf courses are available here ?

Winter flight service to southwest Florida seems like a slam dunk to me, since Toledo Express is so much more convenient than Detroit Metro for northwest Ohio travelers.

Elected? No more; lawmakers bought

The U.S. government and its elected and appointed officials are no longer regulated by the checks and balances intended by our founders.

Instead, they are now regulated by being bought and sold.
