Where, when to find vaccine

Because of a shortage of flu vaccine this year, the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has said only "high-risk" individuals should get a flu shot.

This year, "high risk" is defined as individuals who are age 65 and older; people with a chronic illness, such as diabetes or asthma; people in nursing homes or long-term care facilities; health- care workers involved in direct patient care; pregnant women; children ages 6 months to 23 months, and people with children younger than 6 months.

Seniors 65 and older who haven't received the pneumoccal [pneumonia] vaccine in the last five years are also advised to get that shot, which is not in short supply.

Here are some options and locations for those searching for flu shots:

  • Maxim Healthcare has a Web site, www.findaflushot.com, that directs you to places where flu shots are available. You type in your ZIP code to find a location near you. One caveat: There may not be many on there.

  • Departments of health throughout Ohio and Michigan are scheduling flu shot clinics. Check with your city or county health department to find out their plans.

Lucas County's health department has a flu shot hot line for health department sponsored clinics: 419-213-4172. The department's flu shot clinic list is also available at www.co.lucas.oh.us/Health/FluClinicInfo04.asp.
