ANN ARBOR --- University of Michigan redshirt freshman cornerback J.T. Turner has left the football program, a team official announced today.
Turner, a blue chip recruit in 2009 out of Massillon, Ohio, was expected to play a back up role this year. He asked for and was granted a release of his scholarship yesterday.
UM has now lost arguably its No. 1 recruit from the past three years, all of whom are cornerbacks. Boubacar Cissoko, a 2008 signee, was dismissed from the program last year, and Demar Dorsey, of the 2010 class, was denied admission into the university.
In other news, Jordan Kovacs, a Clay graduate, is the front runner to start at strong safety, defensive coordinator Greg Robinson said.
