ANN ARBOR — Trey Burke’s steal and score with 20 seconds left lifted the fourth-ranked Michigan basketball team to a score-settling 58-57 victory over No. 9 Michigan State today at Crisler Arena.

After the Spartans climbed back from a late 10-point deficit to even the game, they hoped to hold for the last shot. But Burke picked guard Keith Appling and raced down the floor for the go-ahead score.

MSU forward Derrick Nix then made one of two free throws with 8.8 seconds left. After Michigan’s Mitch McGary missed the front end of a one-and-one with 8 seconds remaining, the Spartans could not get off a winning shot attempt.

Burke scored a game-high 21 points as Michigan (24-5, 11-5 Big Ten) moved into a four-way tie for second place in the Big Ten with MSU, Ohio State and Wisconsin. Michigan State throttled the Wolverines in the rivals’ first meeting.
