Tigers call up Fossum

Tigers call up Fossum

The Detroit Tigers promoted left-handed pitcher Casey Fossum from Toledo, making him the third Mud Hens player to be called to the majors in a week.

Fossum, 30, was 3-0 with a 1.96 ERA for the Hens this season. He was scheduled to pitch for Toledo tonight in Louisville. Since joining the Hens starting rotation May 10, he s allowed three runs (two earned) in 261/3 innings.

Fossum had a clause in his contract with Detroit that allowed him to leave the organization if not promoted to the big leagues by the end of the month. He has pitched in parts of seven major league seasons.

To make room for Fossum on the roster, the Tigers designated relief pitcher Francisco Cruceta for assignment. Taking Fossum s place in Toledo is right-hander Lauren Gagnier, promoted from Single-A West Michigan.

The Tigers called up first baseman Jeff Larish a week ago today, and on Thursday promoted outfielder Clete Thomas.
