Early Clipper start dooms Hens
COLUMBUS — The Columbus Clippers vs. the Toledo Mud Hens was the “other game” in Columbus Thursday.
In what was certainly an effort not to interfere with “the game,” the opening of the Ohio State football season against Marshall, the Clippers moved their International League baseball game to a 4:30 p.m. start.
The baseball Clippers scored fast and early, just like the football Buckeyes would do later, for an 8-0 victory. Columbus scored all of its runs in the first three innings.
Charles Forbush (3-4) started for Toledo and geve up all eight runs, seven earned, in just 2 1/3 innings.
Toledo relievers fared much better after the initial Columbus unslaught. Scott Drucker did give up 6 hits in 42/3 innings, but no runs. Fu-Te Ni closed out the action in the eighth, allowing 2 hits.
Justin Henry was the only Hen with more than one hit, going 2-for-4. The baseball game attracted 6,469. When the final out was made 2:36 later, or approximately 7:10, those with OSU football tickets were able to get in their automobiles and hurry up north on High Street to join the 100,000-plus crowd at the Ohio State football stadium.
