7-run inning not enough as Mud Hens lose

8 early runs in first 2 innings pace Clippers’ victory

COLUMBUS — The Mud Hens fell behind Columbus by eight runs after two innings Tuesday night, and even a seven-run fifth inning wasn’t enough to make up the difference as Toledo suffered an 11-8 loss to the Clippers.

In the first inning, Hens starter Shawn Hill gave up a three-run homer to Lonnie Chisenhall, his sixth of the season. The veteran right-hander wasn’t able to survive the second inning, giving up an RBI single by Chisenhall and a three-run triple to Cord Phelps before departing.

Reliever Robbie Weinhardt came on and gave up a run-scoring single to Jeremy Hermida.

Meanwhile, the Mud Hens nearly closed the deficit by sending 10 batters to the plate and scoring seven runs in the fifth.

Ben Guez got the rally started with a single, moved to third on a one-out double by Bryan Holaday, and both runners scored on a double by Kevin Russo. Columbus starter Danny Salazar walked Argenis Diaz, then gave up a two-out infield single to Jordan Lennerton to load the bases.

Reliever Scott Barnes came on and threw a wild pitch that scored Russo, then walked Nick Castellanos to load the bases again. Danny Dorn unloaded them with a grand slam to right — his 12th home run of the season and Toledo’s first grand slam of the year.

The Clippers got two runs back in the bottom of the fifth when Evan Reed loaded the bases, then gave up a two-run Phelps single.

Columbus added a run in the sixth when Tim Fedroff homered off Al Alburquerque.
