Mud Hens, league to honor former manager Larry Parrish

The Mud Hens and the International League are to honor Larry Parrish, former manager of the Toledo team and a 2013 league Hall of Fame inductee, during a pregame ceremony on Tuesday.

The ceremony will be on the field at 6:45 p.m., prior to the Hens game against the Louisville Bats.

Parrish was the Toledo manager for a eight seasons, managing more than 1,120 games and becoming the franchise’s all-time winningest skipper. He became manager in 1994. 1997, he replaced Buddy Bell as manager of the Detroit Tigers, and stayed for 1998 and 1999.

In 2003, Parrish returned to Hens. He was named International League Manager of the Year in 2005 and Sporting News Minor League Manager of the Year after guiding the Mud Hens to its first Governors’ Cup title since 1967. Toledo had the best record in Triple-A Baseball (89-55).

The Hens had its second consecutive Governors’ Cup in 2006 under Parrish. He sat out the 2007 season, but was back for a third stint as team manager in 2008. He left the Hens after the 2010 season to serve as hitting coach for the Atlanta Braves. He rejoined the Detroit organization for the 2013 season as manager of the Class-A West Michigan Whitecaps.
