The Black Swamp Blues Society and the Toledo Jazz Society will award $1,000 scholarships to two area graduating seniors in Scott High School's broadcast communication program, which is open to students from other schools. The societies raised monies for the scholarships from a “Blues & Jazz Trolley Night” held in 2000 to thank the school for playing blues and jazz on its WXTS radio program for more than 25 years.
In an awards ceremony scheduled for 10 a.m. tomorrow in the school's new Bulldog Den, students Gaquila Shoemaker of Scott will be awarded the Black Swamp Blues Society Scholarship, and Alexandra Altaffer of Waite High School will receive the Toledo Jazz Society Scholarship. WXTS is a student-run radio station and will be off the air beginning June 6 until shortly after Labor Day, when school resumes.
