Symphony Classics Series plans finale

The Toledo Symphony Classics Series finale will be performed at 8 p.m. tomorrow and Saturday in the Toledo Museum of Art Peristyle. Stefan Sanderling conducts Gustav Mahler's Fifth Symphony and Haydn's Sinfonia Concertante, highlighting four of the TSO's principal players: Richard Beene, bassoon; Kimberly Bryden, oboe; Martha Reikow; cello, and Kirk Toth, violin. The Perrysburg Symphony performs "Prelude to Summer," the final concert of its 2003-2004 series, at 3 p.m. Sunday in Owens Community College's Fine and Performing Arts Center on Oregon Road. The third annual Grand Rapids Gospel Sing will be presented at 7 p.m. Saturday in the Town Hall of Grand Rapids. Headlining the evening will be Kerry Patric Clark, with members of the Hosanna Lutheran Church choir and other church choirs in the Otsego area. Several local soloists also will be featured. The program is open to the public, with a free-will offering to be collected.


The Maumee Senior Center celebrates 10 years of fun and service with Senior Showcase at 7 p.m. Saturday and 2:30 p.m. Sunday in the Maumee Indoor Theater, 601 Conant St. Senior talent ranging from piano to vocal to skits and recitations will be featured. Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under from Jacky's Depot, 130 West Dudley St., Maumee, and the senior center, 2430 South Detroit Ave., Maumee. Information: 419-893-1994.

First Steps: A Children's Dance Experience, sponsored by the Toledo Ballet, will present student performances at area schools, culminating a 28-week dance education program in three area kindergartens. Kindergarteners participate in a "dance sharing" at the end of each semester, dancing for their classmates and parents in costumes they created. Spring 2004 "dance sharings" are scheduled at 7 p.m. Monday in Edgewater Elementary, 5549 Edgewater Dr.; 6 p.m. Wednesday in Garfield Elementary, 1103 North Ravine Pkwy.; and 1 p.m. May 28 in Stewart Academy, 707 Avondale Ave.


The Michigan Theater celebrates its 75th anniversary season with performances of Leonard Bernstein's Candide at 8 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday in the theater, 603 East Liberty St., Ann Arbor. Appearing in this concert-style production of Bernstein's most inventive theater score are Frederica von Stade of the New York City Opera, tenor Matthew Chellis, Broadway singer-actor Harvey Evans, the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra, University of Michigan musical theater students, and local celebrities.
