The Royal Shakespeare Company returns to the University of Michigan campus in Ann Arbor for a three-week residency in October and November, featuring performances of Anthony and Cleopatra, Julius Caesar, and The Tempest, with film and television star Patrick Stewart in leading roles. The 2006 spring season of the Toledo-Lucas County Public Library's Authors! Authors! Series presented by The Blade features cartoonist Jeff Smith at 7 p.m. March 7 in the Stranahan Theater Great Hall, 4645 Heatherdowns Blvd. After four years of drawing comic strips for Ohio State University's student newspaper starting in 1982, Smith co-founded the Character Builders animation studio in 1986. The Village Players will host the First Look Series of new plays by local writers. Three new plays by northwest Ohio or southeast Michigan playwrights will receive developmental readings at the theater, followed by a reception and discussion.
There is no fee to enter, and no restrictions on length, cast size, or subject matter, but playwrights must be from northwest Ohio or southeast Michigan. Submissions will be accepted Wednesday through Sept. 1; scripts must be typed and securely bound, with author contact information on the cover. Winners will be announced in November.
