LAMBERTVILLE -- Tax accountant Laura Collins has announced she intends to seek the office of Bedford Township treasurer.
Ms. Collins, a Republican, owns Collins and Associates Accounting and Tax Service, which she opened in 1997. If elected, she would replace longtime Treasurer Sherri Meyer, who is retiring. "My plan for the treasurer's position would be to run the office with the same efficiency that has been demonstrated by Sherri Meyer and continue the great customer service that has been maintained while she has held the office," she said.
Ms. Collins, 52, is president of the Bedford Business Association, treasurer of the Bedford High School Alumni Association, and a board member of the Bedford Community Foundation. She also is president and past treasurer/secretary of the Lambertville Pride.
She was born and raised in Toledo and graduated from Whitmer High School. She married and moved to Bedford Township shortly after graduating from Whitmer.
She attended Monroe County Community College and received her bachelor's degree from Siena Heights University.
She said she would be a full-time treasurer if elected and turn over management of her business to her daughter, who works with her.
She said she offers free tax preparation for members of the active military and reservists. Over the past five years, this service has been worth $20,000, she said.
"I truly appreciate everything the military does for United States citizens in defending our freedom and this is our way of showing gratitude and saying thanks," she said.
