Bedford alumni to make hall of fame inductions

The Bedford High School Alumni Association is to induct a mix of educators, coaches, athletes, and a NASCAR crew chief, as well as its 1977 wrestling team, to its hall of fame next month. The individual inductees are longtime teachers Ellen Bacon and Jill Treuhaft, athletes Lindi Bankowski, Stacey Heams, Jess Hurley, and Doug Winkler; and Jim Long.

The ceremony is to start at 6 p.m. Oct. 20 in the high school cafeteria.

A committee made up of Bedford alumni association members picks the nominees every year based on submissions from the public, said Chuck Faller, president of the alumni board.

Ms. Bacon, a 1968 graduate with a 25-year teaching career at Bedford Public Schools, is being honored in the Outstanding Educator category. She has taught at the high school the past 18 years, coached the Bedford Express Robotics Team from 2002 to 2008, and headed the math department for 10 years.

Ms. Bankowski Sallach, a 2001 graduate, is being honored for her achievements in volleyball. An assistant coach at Mississippi State University, she holds six Bedford High School volleyball records and was a recipient in 2008 of the AVCA Thirty Under 30 Award, which recognizes the nation's top young volleyball coaches.

Ms. Heams, a 1988 graduate, is being honored for her achievements in volleyball, basketball, and softball, in which as a senior she was voted Monroe County Player of the Year for leading the region with a .509 batting average. She played softball for four years on a scholarship at the University of Michigan. There, she was Rookie of the Year as a freshman, received the outstanding player award in 1991, and was captain of the 1992 Big Ten championship team. A police officer in Milan, Mich., she is Milan High School's varsity softball coach.

Mr. Hurley, a 1992 graduate, was selected for his achievements in wrestling and football. He was a member of the state championship wrestling teams in 1989 and 1992 and was named a High School All American in 1992. He was voted MVP of several wrestling tournaments and was the team captain twice. He played football for two years and was part of the 1990 GLL championship team.

Mr. Long is a 1975 graduate and is being inducted for his work after graduation with NASCAR. In 1983 he started as a mechanic in the Winston Cup Racing Series and became a car chief for Hendrick Motorsports in 1986. From 1986 to 1994, he was car chief for drivers Geoff Bodine and Kyle Petty. From 1995 to 2005, he was a NASCAR crew chief and worked with such drivers as Ricky Rudd, Terry Labonte, and Kyle Busch. From 2006-2011 he managed the Hendrick Motorsports R & D Team to help develop the "Car of Tomorrow."

Ms. Treuhaft, a physical education teacher at Bedford High, is being inducted as an Outstanding Teacher/Coach. She taught at Bedford High from 1969 to 1999. She was the first Bedford High School volleyball coach and helped develop the program into one that amassed a 64-17 record in her first five years and won a district championship. She was a high school volleyball referee more than 20 years and organized and ran Bedford volleyball tournaments for many years.

Mr. Winkler, a 1973 graduate, excelled in football and baseball, winning nine varsity letters during his high school career. He was an all state center fielder in 1973 and a two-time all GLL Player in both sports. He was named baseball team MVP in 1973, and for 38 years held the school record for most touchdowns in a game. He went on to play minor league baseball for the Kansas City Royals team in Sarasota, Fla., and was an assistant football and baseball coach at Bedford for 10 years.

The 1977 wrestling team is being honored for winning two state championships in a row and for setting numerous school records, including best individual win/loss record. Team members were Ron Binder, John Grose, John Dunnigan, Chip Emptage, Chuck Joseph, Rod Luttrell, Lex Potter, Les Paulson, Bill Salisbury, Bob Snyder, Kelley Stanley, Tony Wiederhold, Jim Borragina, Kerry Cousino, Mike Doyle, Steve Fisher, Jeff Folk, Jeff Gamby, Bill Henes, Ron Huskins, Rich Joseph, Steve Klock, Tim Leffler, Tim McPherson, Bob Quigley, Kevin Whitenburg, Greg Smith, Russ Anderson, Ed Brighton, Joe Church, Dave Daggett, Tom Guyton, Rick Hotaling, Mike Kade, Kevin Martin, Lonnie Osenbaugh, Mike Snyder, Doug Turner, Jay Walter, Bob Warnke, Jeff Wehrle, Dave Wilcox, and Jeff Zimmerman. Team coaches included Head Coach Bill Regnier, Tom Swan, Bob Long, Edd Bankowski, Earl McHenry and manager Jim Fuller.
