Suspect denies guilt in murder of teenager

Walter Triplett was arraigned yesterday in Lucas County Common Pleas Court for the 1998 murder of a 17-year-old Toledo teenager.

Triplett, 50, of 1231 Moore St. pleaded not guilty to one count each of aggravated murder and aggravated robbery. Judge Ronald Bowman appointed attorney Ron Wingate to represent Triplett, and scheduled a pretrial hearing for July 16.

The investigation into the Nov. 22, 1998, murder of Paul Wiggins was reopened recently. The Rogers High School student was found beaten to death in Triplett's North Toledo apartment.

Police arrested Triplett three days later, but prosecutors dismissed the case in March, 1999, because a key witness wouldn't testify. A county grand jury in|dicted Triplett last week, but the indictment was kept sealed until his arrest Tuesday. Triplett is being held in the county jail in lieu of $500,000 bond.
