Police probe suspicious fires in Michigan

HILLSDALE - Police are continuing their search for suspects in a series of fires they believe were intentionally set last weekend.

The state fire marshal said yesterday that at least one of the fires was arson, Detective Brad Martin said.

The first blaze was discovered at 3:30 a.m. Sunday at a Hillsdale College construction site, in which a construction company desk was set on fire. The blaze did not spread.

A second fire was discovered 50 yards from the first blaze at 10:25 a.m., when a woman found her car's interior in flames. The car was parked in the alley behind her home on North Manning Street.

At 5:10 p.m., a man living across from the alley reported a fire in his van. Witnesses told Detective Martin they had seen a group of young adults in the vicinity of the incidents carrying cans of paint.

A $5,000 reward has been offered by the Michigan Arson Prevention Committee for information leading to arrests in the incidents.
