Fire wrecks a Whiteford Township home

OTTAWA LAKE, Mich. - A blaze of undetermined origin yesterday destroyed a single-family home along Whiteford Road in rural Whiteford Township, fire officials said.

Fire crews were called to the two-story home of Rick and Michele Hetzel, 8834 Whiteford, about 8:30 a.m. after a neighbor reported seeing smoke, Whiteford Fire Chief Rob Calhoon said.

The Hetzels were not home at the time, but two family dogs perished in the fire, Chief Calhoon said.

The blaze is believed to have started in the garage, Chief Calhoon said. An estimate of the damage was unavailable yesterday.
