Police called to accident, find man wounded

Police last night were investigating a shooting incident that was discovered when authorities responded to an automobile accident downtown and found a man with a gunshot wound behind the wheel.

The one-vehicle accident was reported about 11:10 p.m. at the intersection of Jefferson Avenue and 17th Street.

When authorities approached the car, which had slid off the road and almost hit a building, they found a man with a gunshot wound in his right thigh and a gun on the seat next to him.

The man, whose name was not immediately available, was taken to St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center. His condition was not available.

He told authorities that the shooting took place in the Brand Whitlock Homes, but there were no reports of gunshots in that area.
