2 Lorain men charged in carryout robberies

Several West Toledo stores were targets

Two Lorain men are being held in Lucas County jail, charged with robbing several West Toledo carryouts this month.

The Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force arrested Richard Kostenbauder, 34, and Juan Alvarez, 26, Thursday and Wednesday, respectively.

Alvarez was arraigned in Toledo Municipal Court Thursday -- he is being held on a $150,000 bond. He will be in court again at 9 a.m. June 2. Kostenbauder is scheduled to be arraigned at 9 a.m. Friday.

An officer over radio traffic asked for Toledo police Sgt. Tim Noble, telling him they had Kostenbauder in the back of a cruiser, just before 9:30 a.m. Thursday.

Police said they believe the two men are the same ones whose images were captured on security cameras in some of the incidents. They include the robberies May 16 and May 18 at the In and Out, 4721 Lewis Avenue.; the May 18 holdup at Ryan's Quick Stop, 5330 Telegraph Road.; and the May 21 robbery at The Shed, 5075 Lewis.

Each time, the pair allegedly entered a business, with one displaying a black handgun. The robbers ordered everybody to lie face-down on the floor, robbed the place of cash, and fled, according to Toledo police Capt. Wes Bombrys.

Toledo police Sergeant Noble said Crime Stopper tips led the task force to a residence in the 5600 block of Bennett, where Alvarez and Kostenbauder were taken into custody. The pair had been staying at this address lately, Sergeant Noble said. Additional charges may be presented when the case goes to the grand jury, the sergeant said.
