U.S. marshals arrest hiding crash suspect
A man accused of causing a van to crash by grabbing the steering wheel was arrested Wednesday.
The U.S. Marshal's Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force arrested Michael Garczynski, 34, at his girlfriend's West Toledo home, authorities said.
The man was one of five people in the van on Nov. 17 when it crashed into a water-filled ditch on State Rt. 199, just south of Eckel Junction Road near Perrysburg.
Garczynski, who was indicted by a Wood County grand jury in December on four counts of felonious assault and two counts of child endangering, is in the Wood County jail.
Rodney Hartzell, a deputy U.S. marshal, said authorities received a tip that Garczynski was at his girlfriend's home in the 6000 block of Red Oak Drive. They said they found him hiding in a closet.
During the investigation, authorities reported receiving at least five false tips from people acquainted with the suspect, trying to throw investigators off the trail.
Mr. Hartzell said warrants will be filed against those accused of knowingly giving false tips.
