BLADE STAFF

One of two teenagers injured when the car they were in struck a landscaping boulder and overturned in South Toledo Friday night was in critical condition at a Toledo hospital Saturday evening.

Nicholas H. Martinez, 17, the car’s driver, was briefly trapped inside his vehicle after it flipped over shortly before 10:45 p.m. Friday.

Toledo police said Mr. Martinez of Charleston Avenue was driving west on South Avenue and lost control while crossing a railroad grade near Henderson Street.

The vehicle went off the street, struck the boulder, and overturned.

He was taken to the University of Toledo Medical Center, formerly Medical College of Ohio Hospital, after Toledo firefighters removed him from his vehicle.

A passenger, Kelsee Lee Barrett, 16, of Brancaster Road, suffered minor injuries and was released to a family member at the scene.

A second passenger, who was not identified, fled the crash scene on foot, police said.
