Identities of victims, driver in crash into pedestrians are released

Police released identities on Sunday of the victims and the driver in the crash of a sport utility vehicle into two pedestrians on an East Toledo sidewalk Saturday night.

The driver, Michael Yates, 41, of Ironwood Avenue, lost control of his vehicle about 8:20 p.m. while driving east on Miami Street near the northbound I-75 exit ramp.

The vehicle swerved off the right side of the road, hitting the two women, who were walking west on the sidewalk on the south side of the street near the Days Inn.

The vehicle, which also struck a fire hydrant, continued about 150 feet before stopping.

Stefanie Arnold, 27, of Painesville in northeast Ohio was pronounced dead at the scene.

Chelsea Skoch, 23, of Madison, also in northeast Ohio, was taken to Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center in critical condition. On Sunday evening, she remained in the hospital in serious condition.

Police reported that both women had suffered multiple traumatic injuries.

Mr. Yates was released from St. Vincent on Sunday.

Police closed Miami Street between the ramp and Oregon Road as well as the northbound I-75 exit ramp Saturday night.

The crash remains under investigation.
