Bedford crash leaves driver seriously hurt

TEMPERANCE —The driver of a vehicle was critically injured today when he collided with a Bedford Township Fire Department rescue squad on Lewis Avenue near Smith Road, authorities said.

The driver, Bruce E. Wyllis, age 63, of Maybee, Mich., was transported by ambulance to Toledo Hospital, where authorities reported he was listed in critical condition. The four volunteers firefighters — three men and a woman — were treated for minor injuries at Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center, said Fire Chief John Bofia.

The accident occurred about 12:30 p.m. when the fire department rescue squad from the Lewis Avenue station was responding to a shed fire in the 6900 block of Lewis.

Chief Bofia said the accident was under investigation by the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office and additional information would be released later.
