Crash of 2 semis kills Monroe man on U.S. 223

BLADE STAFF

OTTAWA LAKE, Mich. -- A Monroe man was killed Wednesday when two semis collided on U.S. 223 in Whiteford Township.

Michael John Andrews, 33, was pronounced dead at the scene, the Monroe County Sheriff's Office said.

Investigators determined one of the tractor-trailers was being driven westbound on U.S. 223 about 11:30 a.m. and hit the back of another tractor-trailer as it was turning left. The semi that was hit stopped on the south shoulder of the roadway facing east. The other trailer went left and rolled over.

Deputy Charles Myers, the first officer on scene, reported the rolled truck was engulfed in flames with the driver trapped inside. Mr. Andrews died in the fire, the sheriff's office said.

The other truck driver, Randolph M. Perdue, 61, of Swea City, Iowa, was not hurt, officials said.
