Toledo police, highway patrol hold recruitment event

Officials from the Toledo Police Department and the State Highway Patrol will be at Government Center in downtown Toledo today until 2 p.m. talking to potential recruits.

Both agencies are looking for men and women interested in becoming either city police officers or state troopers.

Toledo police Lt. Brian Twining said about 2,900 people have filled out interest cards to take an upcoming civil service exam

To be eligible to take the test, would-be recruits must fill out a formal application, which will be available from Nov. 3 until Nov. 16, also on the department's Web site, toledopolice.com.

To qualify for the job, applicants must be between 20 to 34 years old and have a high school diploma or GED equivalent. Besides passing the civil-service exam, applicants must also clear a background check, psychological and medical exams, and participate in an interview.

A physical-fitness test - including 22 push-ups and a 1.5-mile run, which must be completed within 15 minutes and 14 seconds - must also be completed.

The Highway Patrol, in recruitment videos posted on its Web site, says applicants must be able to do a 1.5 mile run and a minimum number of push-ups and sit-ups in one minute. The videos, and more information about the trooper recruitment process, are online at statepatrol.ohio.gov/recruit/index.html.
