Woman struck, killed waiting for school bus

BLADE STAFF

MONROE — A woman waiting for her daughter’s school bus was killed Friday after being struck by a teenage driver, troopers from the Monroe post of the Michigan State Police said.

Neither the 42-year-old woman’s name nor the 17-year-old driver’s was released by authorities Friday.

Troopers said the woman was waiting for a school bus to pick up her daughter about 6:50 a.m. when she was struck by a southbound vehicle on Nobil Avenue between Kay Drive and West Albian Road in Monroe Township.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene; the driver and her sister, who was also in the vehicle, did not report any injuries, troopers said. Authorities declined to say where the daughter of the victim was when her mother was struck, but no other injuries were reported by troopers.

At this time, troopers said speed may be a factor in the crash, but are asking any witnesses to call Michigan State Police at 734-242-3500.

Bobb Vergiels, spokesman for Monroe Public Schools, said the district has counselors on staff, and teachers were made aware of the crash and were told to look for any changes in students’ mood or behavior.

Mr. Vergiels said most students were unaware of the crash because it happened at about the time most were en route to school.

The 17-year-old, he confirmed, is a high school student.

It wasn't clear what grade the victim's daughter was in, but Mr. Vergiels said the buses that operate at that time of day are for the high school.

Mr. Vergiels said the Monroe County Intermediate School District has offered to have counselors available for students over the weekend for any parents who believe their children need such a service.
