One of two children injured in Old South End duplex fire dies

BLADE STAFF

A 4-year-old boy died and a 2-year-old girl was hospitalized following a house fire in Toledo’s Old South End Friday night.

The children, whose names were not released Saturday, were taken to Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center shortly after the fire at a duplex at 721 Vinton St., near Collingwood Boulevard and the Anthony Wayne Trail.

Fire Lt. Matthew Hertzfeld said crews received the call about 7:30 p.m. as a “pediatric unconscious” and upon arrival found the two children and their mother on the porch.

“The officer immediately requested a regular alarm compliment when they saw the smoke,” he said.

He did not know if the children’s mother was injured. The fire apparently began in a bedroom, although it remained under investigation. Lieutenant Hertzfeld said he expected to have more information this afternoon.
