Two people have died in separate shooting incidents in Toledo that occurred in an eight-hour period.
The owner and trainer of a South Toledo gym was shot and killed today at his business in the 700 block of Warehouse Road, Toledo police said, and an 18-year-old woman died after being shot in a car in North Toledo on Sunday night.
Police responded today to a report of a person down at 5:56 a.m. at CrossFit Toledo-Intensity Fitness, 757 Warehouse Rd., where they were met by patrons who said they had found gym owner Joseph Lengel, Jr., 57, suffering from at least one gunshot wound, Lt. Mark King said. Mr. Lengel was taken to the University of Toledo Medical Center, the former Medical College of Ohio Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The victim was shot possibly during a robbery, Sgt. Phil Toney said. Police have made no arrests in the case.
In an unrelated incident, CreJonnia Bell, 19, was pronounced dead at Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center after she was shot four times at a home on West Weber Street in North Toledo. The incident was reported at 10:26 p.m.
Ms. Bell was taken to Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center where she later died, Lieutenant King said. Police have arrested Traquawn Gibson, 18, and charged him with murder. Mr. Gibson was shot in the leg, he was treated and released.
Ms. Bell was shot in her chest, abdomen, and head, said Lucas County Deputy Coroner Dr. Maneesha Pandey, who performed an autopsy today.
The death was ruled a homicide.
Dr. Pandey said that, because Ms. Bell had surgery at Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center after she was shot, it is impossible to determine how far away the shooter was.
An autopsy for Mr. Lengel, Jr., is scheduled for Tuesday.
The two incidents bring the number of homicides in Toledo in 2012 to 33 and the number of homicides in the metro area to 45.
