A 74-year-old Berkey man was critically injured today when the John Deere lawn tractor with snowplow he was driving on Washburn Road in Lucas County's Richfield Township was struck by a 2003 Dodge Stratus that was attempting to pass him.
James Michaels was taken to Toledo Hospital in critical condition, according to troopers with the Toledo post of the Ohio Highway Patrol.
Mr. Michaels was southbound on Washburn Road, south of Sylvania Avenue, at about 10:30 a.m. when he attempted a left turn in the roadway and was struck by the Dodge Stratus driven by Stephen M. Brown, 29, of Berkey, who was attempting to pass Mr. Michaels. Mr. Brown, who was wearing a safety belt, was not injured, according to the highway patrol.
The crash remains under investigation.
