Monroe man charged with operating while intoxicated after rear-ending police cruiser

A Monroe man is in jail tonight on a charge of operating a vehicle under the influence after rear-ending a police cruiser in Monroe.

The man, 68, whose identity was withheld from Monroe County Sheriff's Office officials, was treated at Mercy Memorial and was taken to the Monroe County jail on a charge of operating while intoxicated.

The sheriff's office reported that at 3:54 p.m. Thursday, deputy sheriff Jeremy Peters was driving a marked patrol call near the intersection of South Monroe and Third Streets in Monroe, when his 2008 Ford Police Interceptor was rear-ended by a 2010 Ford that had run the red light while eastbound on Third Street.

The deputy was treated at Mercy Memorial Hospital and released. His Police Service Dog Mia also was in the car and was uninjured.
