Man shot by resident charged in incident

An 18-year-old man was charged with aggravated menacing and criminal trespassing after being shot by a homeowner Saturday.

Anthony Cooper, of 612 Highland Ave., was taken to Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center after being shot by Dennis McGhee, 64, police said.

A hospital spokesman had no information about Mr. Cooper; Mr. Cooper had not been booked into the Lucas County jail as of late Monday.

According to police reports and Toledo Municipal Court documents, Mr. Cooper went to Mr. McGhee's home on Glenwood Avenue, in the central city, at about 5 a.m. Saturday and was banging on a door, wanting to talk to Mr. McGhee's granddaughter.

Mr. McGhee reportedly told Mr. Cooper to go away and shut the door several times. During one of the interactions, Mr. Cooper allegedly said he was “strapped” (meaning he claimed to have a gun), according to court documents.

“The victim [Mr. McGhee], believing his life was in danger, shot the defendant once in the abdomen,” court documents state.

Mr. McGhee has not been charged.

Police found Mr. Cooper lying in Mr. McGhee's driveway. Police reported that his injuries did not appear to be life threatening.
