Lima officer saves 1-year-old

BLADE STAFF

LIMA, Ohio — A Lima police officer resuscitated a 1-year-old boy who was found not breathing in a bathtub.

Officer Eric Mericle II had just finished responding to a nearby call when someone waved him down outside a Haller Street residence just before 11:30 a.m. on Monday. The officer performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation on the child, who was not breathing and turning blue, for about a minute and a half until the boy started breathing.

The child, identified by Lima police as Crew Gillette, was transported to Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus.

A hospital spokesman said she did not have consent to disclose the boy's condition. Lima police Maj. Chip Protsman said the boy was “doing very well” today.

Major Protsman said the child was apparently left unattended for a short period of time. There are no plans to investigate the incident further, he said.
