State investigatingShoot the Rapids

SANDUSKY — The Shoot the Rapids ride at Cedar Point amusement park remained closed Monday, three days after a rider was treated at a hospital for injuries suffered when a boat capsized.

A statement from Cedar Point on Monday said the ride will not reopen until an investigation is completed.

Brad Gates, spokesman for the Ohio Department of Agriculture, which operates an Amusement Ride Safety Division, said it is working with park owner Cedar Fair Entertainment Co., and ride manufacturer IntaRide LLC, based in Glen Burnie, Md., to complete the investigation.

“Ultimately, our goal is to ensure the safety of the ride going forward,” he said. “We’re still in that process and there’s not a set timeline for that yet.”

Mr. Gates said all state amusement rides are required to be inspected at least once a year, but can be inspected or spot-checked more frequently. He said no recent Department of Agriculture inspection of Shoot the Rapids, which opened in 2010, discovered anything out of the ordinary.

All seven riders were evaluated and treated by park EMS after Friday evening’s incident. One person was taken to Firelands Regional Medical Center in Sandusky for further treatment.
