Traffic stop leads to suspected shooter's arrest

BLADE STAFF

An attempted traffic stop late Monday night led police on a brief foot chase before they arrested a man suspected in a shooting.

Trentant Dotson, 21, of 1739 W. Sylvania Ave., is charged with a slew of offenses from the chase -- obstructing official business, possession of drug paraphernalia, resisting arrest, carrying concealed weapons, and two counts each of trafficking in drugs and possession of drugs -- and the outstanding felonious assault charge.

Mr. Dotson was arraigned today in Toledo Municipal Court and ordered to remain in the Lucas County jail in lieu of $125,000 bond.

Mr. Dotson is accused of shooting Kevion Jones, 16, three times at Page Street and Mayville Place on Nov. 29.

Police said they tried to stop a vehicle for driving around the railroad-crossing gates on West Sylvania near Seiss Avenue, but the vehicle turned onto Clara from Bennett.

The driver continued to flee from police and lost control of the vehicle on the snow-and-ice covered Clara and Vermaas avenues. Once the car stopped, the driver bailed and took off running through yards and reportedly tossed a loaded .40-caliber handgun into a yard in the 4100 block of Vermaas, police said.

Officers eventually found Dotson hiding under the back porch of 4138 Lewis Ave. Police said they had to pull Mr. Dotson out from the porch.

During a pat-down, police reported finding numerous prescription pills, crack cocaine, and a digital scale.
