Collision sent tractor-trailer over side of bridge over Manley Road.
Northbound I-475 north of Salisbury Road-Dussel Drive in Maumee has reopened after repairs were made to the barrier wall on a bridge that was damaged in a collision Thursday night.
The collision between a car and a tractor-trailer sent the big rig careening off the bridge over Manley Road. The truck driver was hurt, but his injuries were not considered life-threatening.
Ohio Department of Transportation officials said the freeway's northbound lanes were likely to stay closed at the crash scene until about 5 p.m. for repair of the damaged wall. Matters were complicated by the morning's subzero cold, which limited workers' options for securing replacement barrier.
Crews examine the damaged truck early today that fell off the I-475 overpass Thursday night.
Entrance ramps from I-75, State Rt. 25, U.S. 24, and Salisbury-Dussel are all reopened as well.
Troopers at the Ohio Highway Patrol's Toledo post said a semi driven by Demario Burrell, 25, of Detroit was northbound in the right lane of I-475 about 8:40 p.m. Thursday when a car driven by Daniel Beck, 29, of Toledo entered the highway from the Salisbury-Dussel ramp.
Mr. Beck failed to yield to Mr. Burrell and struck the right side of the semi, troopers reported. After the impact, the semi crossed the left lane, went through a concrete construction barrier, and landed on Manley.
Mr. Beck was not injured. Mr. Burrell was taken to the University of Toledo Medical Center, the former Medical College of Ohio Hospital, with what troopers called non-life-threatening injuries. His condition was not immediately available.
Troopers did not believe alcohol contributed to the crash and are continuing an investigation.
The I-475 bridges over Manley and the Ohio Turnpike are under construction. A state contractor is building new lanes between the existing northbound and southbound lanes to handle traffic for the existing bridges' future reconstruction. Manley Road has been closed since mid-2013 for equipment staging.
