SANDUSKY — Just before 2 a.m. Sunday, Chris Kaman heard a series of gunshots and watched as a large crowd of people ran down Milan Road in Sandusky toward McKelvey Street.
“I ran downstairs to make sure my mom was OK,” Miss Kaman said.
Five people were shot outside the Milan Road Bar and Grill early Sunday, Sandusky police Lt. Richard Braun said. At least one person was taken to a hospital via a medical helicopter. It’s unclear how seriously the others were injured.
Police found more than 70 shell casings outside the bar, Lieutenant Braun said.
Miss Kaman owns Kaman’s Korner, a bar at the corner of Milan and McKelvey, and lives above it. Kaman’s Korner closes at 1 a.m., and she was watching a movie with her husband when the shots rang out. She estimated hearing at least 50 gunshots.
“I mean, it just did not stop,” she said.
People who go to the Milan Road Bar and Grill sometimes park in Kaman’s Korner’s parking lot, she said, so she could see people running to their cars. Two people, she said, were bleeding.
“It just kept going and going and people were running everywhere,” Miss Kaman said.
Tony Gonzales, who lives just around the corner from the Milan Road Bar and Grill, said he heard the shots as well.
“I have guns and I know what guns sound like,” he said. “And it sounded like a war zone.”
His son also happened to be driving by when the shooting occurred, Mr. Gonzales said.
“He’s lucky that he didn’t get hit by anything,” he said.
As soon as he heard the shots, Mr. Gonzales said he knew they were coming from the Milan Road Bar and Grill, and he was upset about the violence in his community.
“It’s upsetting. It really is,” he said. “But Sandusky is a good town.”
As of Sunday evening, there was no word of arrests.
Anyone with information on the shooting is urged to call Sandusky police at 419-627-5863.
