Local township clerks in Monroe County have been receiving calls from absentee voters wondering what they should do to recast their vote.
The Michigan Bureau of Elections told Monroe County officials Tuesday to reissue all absentee ballots for the Nov. 7 election because separation lines were missing under the straight party vote and fill-in circles were misaligned. This affects 26,000 ballots that have been sent out, county Clerk Geri Allen said.
"Please do not call the local clerks at this specific time," she said. "Local clerks will be contacting those people who have already voted absentee with information on how to proceed within the next few days."
More than 100,000 ballots, including those for absentee voters, were printed for Monroe County, and all must be reprinted before the election. Local clerks will likely include instructions on how to proceed with the reprinted absentee ballots they will soon send to residents, Ms. Allen said.
"We will keep in contact with the state and make sure [the notification process] is in accordance with how the state wishes us to proceed," she said.
