WAUSEON - Pledging to uphold conservative values, State Sen. Steve Buehrer (R., Delta) launched a congressional campaign for Ohio's Fifth District this morning at the Fulton County Courthouse. Democrat Robin Weirauch, who challenged Mr. Gillmor in 2004 and 2006, also declared her candidacy today.
"The solutions to our problems are not far away in marble buildings in Washington," Mr. Buehrer said. "They are here in the common sense wisdom of the heartland."
The congressional seat opened up after the Sept. 5 death of Paul Gillmor, a Republican who served the Fifth District for 10 terms.
"We face serious challenges in Northwest Ohio and we need a strong, independent voice in Washington to bring us the change we need," Ms. Weirauch said in a statement. "And we must bring the war in Iraq to a responsible end with a clear and comprehensive exit strategy to bring our servicemen and women home."
On the issue of Iraq, Mr. Buehrer said Congress should not attempt to "armchair quarterback" the war but allow the generals on the ground to implement their strategies.
State Rep. Bob Latta (R., Bowling Green) announced his candidacy for the congressional seat last week.
