A Toledo man has been charged with stealing dozens of campaign signs from yards throughout the city, police said.

Douglas Black, 66, of 2745 Kingsford Drive, was issued a court summons for the theft of signs for Michelle Wagner’s judicial campaign and for criminal damaging. Mr. Black, according to documents filed with the Toledo Municipal Court, “did cut the signs up into small pieces damaging the two signs.”

The signs — 53 in all — were reported missing on Aug. 19, police said.

The value of the signs was stated as $1,484.

Mr. Black was summoned to appeared in court on Sept. 2.

Democrat Michelle Wagner, a prosecutor in Sylvania Municipal Court, and Republican Mark Davis, a local attorney, will face off for a Toledo Municipal Court seat with Toledo city Prosecutor Dave Toska in the Nov. 8 election. Mr. Toska has not declared a party affiliation.

They are vying for the seat now held by Democratic Judge Francis X. Gorman, who is stepping down.
