Schauer jumps into race for Michigan governor

U.S. Rep. Mark Schauer

LANSING — Democrat Mark Schauer declared his candidacy for Michigan governor on Tuesday, kicking off his campaign to replace GOP Gov. Rick Snyder.

Mr. Schauer, the first Democrat to officially announce a gubernatorial bid, said he filed the paperwork with the Secretary of State, allowing him to begin fund-raising for the 2014 race. “I’m ready to run, I’m ready to work, and I’m ready to win in 2014,” said the former congressman from Battle Creek, 51, in an email to supporters. “We need a governor who will protect the middle class and invest in education to create good jobs for Michigan workers.”

Mr. Schauer said Mr. Snyder has taken the “wrong direction.” “Snyder raised taxes on pensions and working families, and his cuts to local schools have led to widespread teacher layoffs and higher tuition — all so he could pay for a $1.8 billion tax giveaway to corporate special interests.”

Mr. Snyder signed tax changes aimed to set up a simple, fairer system. To offset a $1.6 billion business tax cut, he and GOP lawmakers approved a $1.4 billion hike on individuals. Fewer homeowners get a tax credit, a deduction for children is gone, taxes must be paid on pension income, and low-income workers’ refundable credit has been cut.
