Kroger joins rivals offering $4 prescriptions
Kroger Co. said yesterday that it will become the latest retailer to offer generic drugs for $4 per prescription in the Toledo area and various cities in Ohio, beginning immediately.
Over a year ago Wal-Mart Stores Inc., Target Corp., and Giant Eagle Inc. began offering more than 300 widely used generic drugs either for free or for $4. Last winter Meijer Inc. began offering seven of the most widely used antibiotics for free.
Like its competitors, Kroger s $4 price will apply to more than 300 generic drugs prescribed for 30-day supplies. Also like its rivals, its list generally consists of older generics but in a twist, Kroger will also offer two generics used for birth control, Ortho Cyclen and Ortho Tri Cyclen, and a fertility drug, for $9 each.
