Three Toledo area Value City Department stores to close

The Toledo area s three Value City Department Stores will be closed before the end of March, eliminating the jobs of 174 workers, a spokesman for the new owners said.

The stores at 5960 Lewis Avenue in Toledo, 2694 Detroit Ave. in Maumee, and 2678 Woodville Rd. in Northwood this week began closeout sales in anticipation of their closing. The intent is to shut the outlets within six to eight weeks.

Value City Furniture Stores, owned by another company, are not affected.

VCHI Acquistion Co., of Columbus, which recently bought an 81 percent ownership of Value City Department Stores from Retail Ventures Inc., also of Columbus, said today that it is closing 37 of 113 stores that don t fit into its plans to revive the chain.

When it is finished, the owner will have 53 Value City stores and 23 other stores will be converted to Burlington Coat Factory outlets. VCHI is closing 14 Value City stores in Ohio.
