Mix s jersey first UT will retire

There are any number of banners hanging from the rafters of Savage Hall. But no uniforms.

That will change Feb. 17 when the University of Toledo retires Steve Mix s No. 50 jersey.

We felt the time was right to honor one of the greatest Rocket student-athletes in our history, UT athletic director Mike O Brien said yesterday.

Mix, a 6-foot-7 forward, is one of just three Rockets ever to earn All-American honors. He played from 1966-69, averaging more than 20 points per game in all three of his seasons. He was the Mid-American Conference player of the year as a senior.

I was totally shocked and amazed when this was proposed to me, Mix said.

I know it has never been done before. It s a great honor.

Mix played in the NBA for 13 seasons, most of them with the Philadelphia 76ers, and was a league all-star in 1975-76.

UT will play a home game in the ESPN Bracketbuster series on Feb. 17. The opponent and game time will be announced at a later date.

Mix s jersey retirement will take place during ceremonies at halftime.
