The University of Toledo recovered an onside kick, and ran out the clock, to beat Western Michigan University, 66-63, on Tuesday night at the Glass Bowl.
The Rockets' Jeremiah Detmer kicked a 39-yard field goal with 1:59 left in regulation for the decisive points.
Western Michigan's Doug Wiggins tied the game at 21 at the 9:36 mark in the second quarter with his 20-yard interception return on Terrance Owens' intended pass to Kenny Stafford, and the Broncos went ahead 28-21 on Alex Carder's 64-yard touchdown pass to Josh Schaffer with 7:06 to play in the first half.
UT running back Morgan Williams retied the game with his 24-yard run with 4:22 left in the second quarter.
The Broncos jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter on a pair of touchdown passes by Carder, a 7-yarder to Clark Mussman at the 8:24 mark and an 11-yarder to Jordan White at the 5:53 mark.
But the Rockets responded with Owens’ 23-yard TD pass to Jerome Jones with 3:12 left in the quarter, and then took advantage of a pair of WMU turnovers.
Adonis Thomas tied the game at 14 on a 40-yard swing pass from Owens at the 0:53 mark, and Dan Molls scooped up a fumble by White and rambled 24 yards to put UT up by 7 with 14 seconds left in the period.
