J.D. Smith, an associate professor of astronomy at the University of Toledo, has been named a 2012 Cottrell Scholar by the Research Corporation for Science Advancement.
The award includes a $75,000 grant, which will help him complete research for two projects.
Mr. Smith was one of 11 awardees and the only one to win the award in astronomy.
