JOHNSTOWN, Pa. — Toledo started a three-game road trip by getting blanked by host Wheeling 3-0 on Friday night at the Cambria County War Memorial Arena, evening the teams’ season series at 1-1-1 this season.
The game was played in the arena formerly known as the home of the Johnstown Jets franchise. Wheeling plays 10 of its home games at the War Memorial, which is about 120 miles east of Wheeling, W.Va. This was the fourth game of the season for the Nailers at the arena.
Toledo (15-19-1) was outshot 28-18 while going 0-for-5 on the power play.
Wheeling (21-13-2) was 1-for-4 with the man advantage.
The Nailers’ Denver Manderson scored on the power play and assisted on Brian Day’s first tally of the season in the second period to take a two-goal lead.
Peter Lenes added his 12th of the season with an empty-net goal in the third to complete the scoring.
Toledo goaltender Dustin Carlson made 25 stops.
Prior to the game the Walleye agreed to terms with forward Andrew Owsiak. Owsiak was playing this season with Brooklyn in the Federal Hockey League where he scored 15 goals and 17 assists in 27 games. Owsiak played his college hockey at Dartmouth with current Walleye forward Adam Estoclet.
