Walleye's Rogers scores OT winner

GREENVILLE, S.C. — Kyle Rogers scored with six seconds left in overtime to propel Toledo to a 2-1 win over host Greenville on Sunday afternoon at the BI-LO Center.

The win keeps the Walleye (23-24-4) four points back of a possible ECHL Eastern Conference playoff slot.

Cincinnati, Reading, and Chicago all have 54 points while Toledo has 50 with 21 games remaining in the regular season.

The win is also sweet after giving up five goals in the third period of a 8-3 loss on Friday.

"We really had to improve our defensive coverage to avoid a repeat of Friday," said coach Nick Vitucci. "We did a much better job of clogging things up and not let them get going offensively.

"Unfortunately we couldn't get our offense on track."

In the first, Greenville collected the lone goal at 12:44 of the period when Brent Cornelius beat Alec Richards (35 saves).

The Road Warriors outshot the Walleye 15-10 in the first period.

Toledo outshot Greenville 13-7 in the second period but could not tie the game.

Joey Martin tied the contest with an unassisted goal midway through the third.

Kyle Rogers beat BJ Obrien (34 saves) between the pads while Kyle Page collected the lone assist on Rogers's 18th goal of the season.

Toledo stopped all three of Greenville's power play chances while going 0-for-1 with the man advantage in the win.

The Road Warriors came into to the game as the top power play unit in the ECHL.

The Walleye's next game will be a 10:30 a.m. contest at Kalamazoo on Wednesday.
