Walleye take advantage of power play chances in 5-2 win at Wheeling


WHEELING, W. Va. — Two power play goals by Wes O’Neill helped the Toledo Walleye earn a 5-2 victory at Wheeling on Friday night.

O’Neill’s first goal came 17:11 into the second quarter and broke a 2-2 tie on assists from Willie Coetzee and Max Campbell. His second goal came 52 seconds into the third period on assists from Terry Broadhurst and Ben Youds. The second O’Neill goal gave the Walleye a two-goal advantage that they would hold until Kyle Rogers put home an empty-net goal with 53 second remaining.

Defenseman Cody Lampl started off the scoring for the Walleye with a goal 12:48 into the opening period.

Wheeling’s Kevin Veilleux tied the game at 1 with a goal 1:10 into the second quarter. Randy Rowe gave Toledo back a one-goal advantage tallying a score 12:09 into the second period.

Cody Chupp of Wheeling tied the game back up at 2 just over a minute later before O’Neill scored the first of his goals.
