Simpson stymies Cyclones as Walleye get road win

CINCINNATI — Toledo goalie Kent Simpson recorded his first shutout as a professional as he led the Walleye to a 2-0 blanking of Cincinnati on Thursday.

Simpson finished with 20 saves to get the shutout and improved to 10-9-3.

The Walleye scored a power-play goal late in the first period and it stood up as the game winner against first-place Cincinnati.

Joey Martin scored on the man advantage with 36 seconds left in the opening period on assists from Cody Lampl and Andrej Nestrasil.

Stephon Thorne added an insurance goal at the 13:18 mark of the third period. Pat Knowlton drew the assist.

Toledo (24-17-4) pulled within five points of the North Division-leading Cyclones (26-16-5).

Simpson made six saves in the first, four in the second, and 10 in the final period.

“We did an outstanding job in our own zone tonight and Kent Simpson deserved the shutout Walleye,” coach Nick Vitucci said.

Martin scored his ninth of the season. Nestrasil set up Lampl who in turn fired a cross-ice pass to Martin.

The second period saw each team get numerous chances but both goaltenders held strong. Cyclones goalie Michael Houser finished with 24 saves.

Thorne scored his fifth of the season.

Toledo improved to 4-2-0 against Cincinnati this season. The Walleye have just two more games left against the Cyclones.

The Walleye return home on Friday night to host the Elmira Jackals at 7:05 p.m. They then host Reading on Saturday.

FISH TALES: Toledo brought back G Jimmy Spratt before the game.

Spratt, who played at Bowling Green State University, was Toledo's backup goaltender last weekend. The 27-year-old also played for Toledo in 2010-11.
