Sylvania Township has posted openings for an administrator to succeed Hugh Thomas and a construction manager to oversee the township fire department's capital building program.

Applications for the township administrator position are due Sept. 1; the deadline to apply for the construction manager job is Aug. 15.

"We will start looking at resumes immediately after" the application deadlines, said Carol Contrada, chairman of the township trustees, who voted July 6 to fire Mr. Thomas without cause.

Trustees said afterward they were dissatisfied with Mr. Thomas' communication of issues with the construction of township Fire Station No. 3, which opened in late June.

Creating the construction manager position separates that role from that of the township administrator.

Mrs. Contrada said she considers that position to be temporary until two other fire stations are built.

Construction of the next, Station No. 2 on McCord Road, is about to begin; a site has not been chosen for the final one, a replacement for Station No. 1 in downtown Sylvania.

Neither job advertisement includes a salary range but instead asks applicants to name a "salary requirement."

Mr. Thomas' salary at the time of his firing was about $128,000.

Mrs. Contrada said it's not certain that the construction manager would be paid a salary; compensation for that position could be on an hourly or even "by the job" basis.

"We want people to able to come in and give us a proposal," she said. "Construction managers are paid differently in different places."
